St. Mary's welcomes Baptism enquiries

Baptisms (also called christenings) are joyful times at St Mary's Church, Alsager, where about 40 people are baptised each year. To make an enquiry please come along to one of the Sunday services and make yourself known to a member of the clergy or one of the Church Wardens.

Infants traditionally have three godparents. Boys usually have two godfathers and girls two godmothers. Godparents must themselves be baptised. It's desirable that they're confirmed too. Godparents affirm their Christian faith and commitment on behalf of their godchild.

Older children and adults have sponsors instead of godparents.

If you need any help or guidance regarding godparents, please contact one of the clergy. It's possible that you may want to talk to a member of the clergy about the Service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child, which is an alternative to Baptism.

The Service

During 2018 Baptism services will usually be on the second Sunday of the month at 12 noon. On occasion other arrangements may be made.

During the service, parents and godparents will be asked to make promises on behalf of the child. Towards the end of the service, the parents receive the baptism certificate and candle. The baptism service is a lovely one to bring children to; we do have facilities for the very young ones.

Baptism Assistant:  The clergy are assisted with the administration associated with baptisms by Mrs Jan Kermeen and Mrs Ann Lancefield-Walker

Registers: A digital version of the parish Baptism register from 1898 – 1986 is available at Alsager Library and at the County Records Office, Duke Street, Chester CH1 1RL
